The Hand-Painted Kerala Cheppu

The Hand-Painted Kerala Cheppu

Behold this vibrant and exquisitely decorated round wooden casket, a traditional Kerala artifact known as a Cheppu (trinket box). This unique piece captures the essence of South Indian folk art, distinguished by its hand-painted lacquered surface that features a mesmerizing, concentric geometric pattern in deep hunter green and rich orange-red hues.

This artifact is a superlative demonstration of artistry, combining polished wood construction with classic brass hardware. The domed lid and spherical body are fully adorned with the repeating, intricate pattern, giving it a jewel-like quality. The box is secured and accented by bold, gold-toned brass fittings, including a heavy central lock-plate with decorative floral cutouts and a practical ring handle atop the lid. Additional brass rings, or handles, are positioned symmetrically around the sides of the box's body. The combination of the deep, earthy tones of the lacquer work with the opulent gleam of the brass creates a sophisticated, antique aesthetic.

It demands attention and celebrates the rich tradition of Kerala's wood art and mural-inspired color schemes, serving as a powerful piece of decorative art and a beautiful container for precious items.

Ideal for: Prominently displaying as a traditional accent piece on a vanity, dresser, or side table; as a luxury container for jewelry, keys, or small keepsakes; and for adding a touch of bold color, fine detail, and unique cultural history to any space.
